Preparation & Time Commitment
Crew will need to commit to the entire month of April with us for this voyage. Our journey begins in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where we’ll dedicate the first several days to preparation. This time will be filled with provisioning food and supplies, conducting hands-on sailing and safety training, and waiting for the ideal weather window to set sail. To keep your travel plans flexible, avoid booking return flights in advance, as you’ll arrange them after we make landfall in the Marquesas, with most connections routing through Papeete, Tahiti.
Socorro Stopover
After two nights of sailing from Cabo San Lucas, we’ll stop over for a couple of nights at Socorro and San Benedicto Islands, a world-class diving destination. Here, we’ll plunge into crystal-clear waters to swim alongside giant Pacific manta rays, sharks, and other awe-inspiring pelagic species. This stopover is a highlight of the journey, offering a thrilling opportunity to connect with the ocean’s most majestic creatures in an unspoiled paradise, adding an unforgettable chapter to your Pacific adventure. You can read more about Socorro here.
The Voyage
Our remaining passage from Socorro to the Marquesas Islands will take 15-20 days depending on conditions. It promises to be a transformative experience, blending exhilarating sailing with moments of profound serenity. We’ll share responsibilities like watch-keeping, cooking, and maintaining Neverland, all while we teach you the art of sailing. As we traverse the Pacific, you might spot dolphins dancing in the waves or whales breaching on the horizon. In the Intertropical Convergence Zone, known as the doldrums, we may encounter periods of complete calm with no winds, transforming the ocean into a glass-like expanse stretching endlessly in all directions. During these serene moments, you can dive in for a swim or paddleboard in the middle of the Pacific, surrounded by tranquil beauty. With Starlink satellite internet onboard, we’ll stay connected throughout the journey, making this an ideal adventure for digital nomads and location-independent professionals who need to balance their remote work with exploration. Training is provided to ensure everyone thrives, regardless of experience.
A highlight of our voyage will be crossing the equator, a time-honored milestone for sailors. As we pass from the Northern to the Southern Hemisphere, we’ll celebrate with a traditional ceremony, where first-time equator-crossers, known as “pollywogs”, become trusty “shellbacks” through lighthearted rituals. Expect playful traditions like paying tribute to King Neptune with storytelling, music, or a ceremonial splash in the sea, forging camaraderie and marking your place in seafaring history.
Marquesas Islands
Upon reaching the Marquesas Islands in late April, we’ll be greeted by dramatic cliffs, lush jungles, and the vibrant pulse of Polynesian culture. We can explore ancient tikis, wander pristine beaches, and immerse ourselves in the rich traditions of these remote islands. This final destination is a reward for our journey, offering a chance to unwind and reflect on the incredible crossing. With its rugged beauty and warm hospitality, the Marquesas will leave an indelible mark on your heart.
We’ll probably make landfall at the island of Hiva Oa, where we can clear in with customs and immigration before deciding how we want to spend the rest of our time. For those crew on a short schedule, there are flights available from Hiva Oa to Papeete, Tahiti where you can catch your return flight home. We’ll spend a few days of resting, re-provisioning, and exploring Hiva Oa before continuing our journey through the Marquesas Islands.
Our next stop will be the nearby island of Tahuata, where we can enjoy some peaceful nights in beautiful anchorages with great snorkeling and scuba diving right off the back of our yacht. Tahuata, like all of the Marquesas Islands, is lush and mountainous with opportunities for jungle and waterfall hikes to incredible vistas. There’s one anchorage that is a feeding station for giant Pacific manta rays and we can jump in the water every morning to experience several of them gracefully flying through the water.
If there are any crew needing to depart for home at this point, we can return to Hiva Oa to catch a flight to Papeete, Tahiti. Otherwise, for crew able to extend their journey with us, our next move will be to sail 100 miles to Nuku Hiva—the largest island of the Marquesas and arguably its crown jewel.
Nuku Hiva has it all, and in abundance. On shore we can explore rugged mountains and cliffs, rainforests, lush valleys, dramatic waterfalls, ancient ruins and stone carvings, and a 600 year old double-trunked banyan tree at an ancient ceremonial site. Underwater, the scenery is no less dramatic. The rugged coastline of Nuku Hiva continues down below and we will be spoiled for choice with crystal clear dive sites featuring walls and canyons, pristine reefs, and an abundance of large pelagics like manta rays and sharks.
Nuku Hiva will be our final stop in the Marquesas Islands and crew can book a return flight home from here through Papeete, Tahiti.
